Good Morning England !

The Boat That Rocked is an ensemble comedy in which the romance takes place between the young people of the '60s and pop music. It's about a band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that, incomprehensibly, preferred jazz. The Count, a big, brash, American god of the airwaves; Quentin, the boss of Radio Rock -- a pirate radio station in the middle of the North Sea that's populated by an eclectic crew of rock and roll DJs; Gavin, the greatest DJ in Britain who has just returned from his drug tour of America to reclaim his rightful position; Dave, an ironic, intelligent and cruelly funny co-broadcaster; and a fearsome British government official out for blood against the drug takers and lawbreakers of a once-great nation. I want my MTV (back!!!)

MTV (Music Television) is an American cable television network based in New-York. Launched on August 1, 1981, the original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by on-air hosts known as VJs.
MTV launched with the words "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll," spoken by John Lack. Those words were immediately followed by the original MTV theme song, a crunching guitar riff written by Jonathan Elias and John Petersen, playing over a montage of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
Appropriately, the first music video shown on MTV was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles.
***
One of their best and famous program is MTV Unplugged.
MTV Unplugged is a series showcasing popular musical artists playing acoustic instruments.
Unplugged refers to rock musicians primarily known for playing electric amplified instruments (usually the electric guitar & electric bass) performing live using primarily acoustic instruments.

The inspiration for the Unplugged series has been attributed to the popularity among musicians of a variety of musical performances on stage, film, television and record in earlier decades (Elvis Presley's "In-the-Round" performance in his 1968 Comeback Special) The first rock artists to perform in an "unplugged" mode on MTV were Jethro Tull, who on November 17, 1987 performed a bit of "Serenade to a Cuckoo" and "Skating Away (On the Thin Ice of the New Day)". XTC performed in May 1989 and Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora performed "Livin' On A Prayer" & "Wanted Dead or Alive" during the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards.
Following the popularity of the Bon Jovi performance, MTV began the Unplugged series of concerts.

Some artists on MTV Unplugged
Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, R.E.M, Lenny Kravitz, Sting, Eric Clapton, Nirvana, George Michael, Oasis, Aerosmith, Rod Stewart, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant,...

The success and popularity of the series has inspired artists to emulate the format in other venues.

MTV's sister channel, VH1, made the format even more intimate by interspersing semi-acoustic performances with the artists discussing the history and memories of the songs, in VH1 Storytellers.
Bon Jovi performed unplugged in 2007 on CMT.

Today, MTV is completely different. It still plays a very limited selection of music videos (mostly pop), but unfortunately the channel primarily broadcasts reality television shows targeted at adolescents and young adults.

The Prisoner

The Prisoner - Allegorical British 1960s science fiction television series starring and co-created by Patrick McGoohan (aka Number 6).
"The Prisoner" (1967-1968) is a unique piece of television. It addresses issues such as personal identity and freedom, democracy, education, scientific progress, art and technology, while still remaining an entertaining drama series.
Over seventeen episodes we witness a war of attrition between the faceless forces behind 'The Village' (a Kafkaesque community somewhere between Butlins and Alcatraz) and its most strong willed inmate, No. 6. who struggles ceaselessly to assert his individuality while plotting to escape from his captors.

60 minutes: Investigative television newsmagazine on US television, which has run on CBS News since 1968.

The program was created by long time producer Don Hewitt who set it apart by using a unique style of reporter-centered investigation. It has been among the top-rated TV programs for much of its life, and has garnered numerous awards over the years. It is considered by many to be the preeminent investigative television program in the United States. Seven Ages Of Rock

Seven Ages Of Rock - BBC Documentary (7 films, duration +/-1h)
Finally broadcasted (RTBF) on every Monday this summer in Belgium.
The first one starts tonight... Don't miss it !

1. The Birth of Rock
The rock revolution of the 1960's seen through the life and music of Jimi Hendrix.
The first doomed icon of rock, Hendrix was the synthesis of everything that had gone before him and all that was to come. The Birth Of Rock also explores the influence of rhythm & blues on a generation of British musicians such as The Rolling Stones, Cream and The Who, and how the song-writing of Bob Dylan and studio developments of The Beatles transformed the possibilities and ambitions of rock.

2. White Light - White Heat
The story of how artistic and conceptual expression permeated rock. From the pop-art multi-media experiments of Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground to the sinister gentility of Peter Gabriel's Genesis, White Light, White Heat Place traces how rock became a vehicle for artistic ideas and theatrical performance. We follow Pink Floyd from the fated art school genius of Syd Barrett through the global success of Dark Side of the Moon to the ultimate rock theatre show, The Wall. Along the way, the film explores the retro-futurism of Roxy Music and the protean world of David Bowie.

3. Blank Generation
A tale of two cities, London and New York and the birth of punk. Each city created a bastard child that marked the biggest and fundamental shift in popular music since Elvis walked into Sun Studios. Blank Generation unpicks the relationship between the bankrupt New York and the class and race-riven London of the mid- s and explores the music of The Sex Pistols, The Clash, Ramones, Television, Patti Smith, The Damned and Buzzcocks.

4. Never Say Die
The story of the longest surviving and certainly the loudest genre of rock, heavy metal. With no sign of disappearing, metal has been the most controversial and misunderstood of all rock genres. Emerging at the tail end of the hippy dream from the rust belt of industrial England, heavy metal would go on to secure the most loyal fan base of all. With Black Sabbath as the undisputed Godfathers, we follow their highs and lows, and, along the journey, meet Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Metallica.

5. We Are The Champions
We Are The Champions follows the development of some the biggest names in Rock, among them Queen, Bruce Springsteen, The Police and Dire Straits and shows how, through events such as Live Aid and the rise of MTV, rock achieved a global influence on culture and politics. The film concludes in the early 90s, as U2 effectively brought the era to a close by reinventing the big rock show so completely, that fifteen years later most major rock tours are still pale facsimiles.

6. Left Of The Dial
The rise of alternative rock in the USA. From its early underground days where bands like Black Flag drew inspiration from the DIY ethos of punk, Left Of The Dial traces the history of the network of fans, clubs and fanzines that sustained the scene and launched the careers of bands like R.E.M., The Pixies and Hüsker Dü. The film takes a fresh look at the explosion of the Seattle scene, culminating in the success of Nirvana's 'Nevermind' and the tragic loss of Kurt Cobain, an artist whose triumph and tragedy continues to cast an inescapable shadow.

7. What The World Is Waiting For
The story of British indie, beginning with The Smiths, the archetypal indie group. The film follows The Stone Roses as the heirs to the indie crown, Suede's dark sexuality and the media saturation of Brit-pop's Blur v Oasis. What The World Is Waiting For explores how indie ultimately lost its once-cherished intimacy and integrity in front of 250,000 fans at Oasis's Knebworth spectacle in 1996 and how, by returning to its roots in clubs and bars (and even front rooms) with bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines and The Arctic Monkeys, indie became respectable again.
